Author Notes: A former regular officer in the Royal Horse Guards, J.N.P. Watson started his polo in the army and later represented teams around the world and was for several seasons a playing member of the Guards Club. He was on the editorial staff of Country Life and polo correspondent for The Times. In 1982 he was awarded a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship in recognition of his writings on animal welfare and wild life conservation. J.N.P. Watson has written a number of books including The World of Polo, Past & Present. The author lives in Sussex
