Author Notes: Western riding and its history has been an all-consuming passion for Jane Lake from an early age. Having ridden Western for the first time in America at the age of sixteen, she realised at once that the classical style in which she had been trained would become her secondary equestrian interest. Enthusiasm and experience developed, and for 2 years she taught at, and assisted to run, a Western stable in Southern Spain. Jane Lake stresses that however Western riding develops today, particularly for the show ring, it should not be severed from its historical roots.
