Author Notes: SERGEANT RICK PELICANO has been a mounted police officer with the Maryland National Park Police for over 25 years. Shortly after he began his tenure in the department he was put in charge of training the horses and officers, preparing them for crowd control, event security, and executive protection, in addition to daily patrol duties and mounted police competitions. In 1997 Sergeant Pelicano began to conduct bombproofing clinics for the general equestrian public, translating the methods he successfully used to prepare police horses and officers into easy-to-apply techniques that help make riding safer and more fun for riders of every age, ability, and discipline.
